  • First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out —Because I was not a socialist.
  • Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out — Because I was not a trade unionist.
  • Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out — Because I was not a Jew.
  • Then they came for me — and there was no one left to speak for me.

— Martin Niemöller

We humans are excellent at persecuting one another. Yes… other animals attack other creatures, sometimes even there own kind. But their reason for doing so is never out pure spite. The lion does not kill the leopard just because he doesn’t like his spots. It is primarily about competition for food or breeding rights.

Why do we attack, or simply denigrate, those of our own species who are a little different? Sadly, it is often because of our own insecurity.

I don’t like you because your skin color is different than mine, or you are taller… or shorter than me… or because I’m feeling a bit insecure and I am hoping that bullying you will make me feel better about myself.

It is very difficult to understand how killing millions of people will improve one’s lot in life, but we humans have used that bit of logic in an effort to get ahead.

It is kind of a sad state of affairs to find myself disliking my own species… But that’s where I am…

Oh well, it’s time to refill the bird feeder… I guess I’ll do that…

Pssst… Don’t tell anyone, but I actually think democratic socialism is a pretty fair system… Oh never mind… Tell the whole world.

:o)
